Duties

A Research Specialist A is sought to work in the Dept. of Neurosurgery and Penn Center for Brain Injury and Repair to assist with research in the field of neurotrauma and post-traumatic epilepsy. Specifically, the research seeks to advance understanding of the acute and chronic neuropathological consequences of traumatic brain injury and will involve experiments utilizing both histopathology and cell culture.Excellent organizational and communication skills, as well as attention to detail are of great importance. The candidate should be able to work well independently, as well as part of a team.Primary responsibility includes cell culture techniques and maintenance, media preparation, cell isolation and microscopy. Other responsibilities will include functional assessment, tissue processing and immunohistochemistry, surgical preparation, data recording and analysis, lab and equipment maintenance, supply inventory,ordering and general lab duties. Responsibilities will also include student training and management, & regulatory and building coordination and communication.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s Degree in Neuroscience, Biology, Biomedical Engineering or closely related field and 0 to 1 year of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. The successful candidate should be a highly motivated individual with some previous laboratory experience (animal model and cell culture experience preferred but not required). The candidate should possess strong written and verbal communication skills, as well as familiarity with analyzing, graphing and presenting data. Attention to detail, organizational skills, reliability, ability to work independently and willingness to work cooperatively with others is extremely important.
