Duties

The University of Pennsylvania Institute for Regenerative Medicine has a Research Specialist B/C position open in the human induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Core Facility (iPSC Core). The Research Specialist will be responsible for generating genome edited hESC/hiPSC lines using CRISPR/Cas9 and other emerging gene editing technology for Core facility users. He/she will design, construct and validate all vectors required for each gene editing project; and generate and characterize edited cell lines to be delivered to Core users. The Specialist will interact frequently with Core users to discuss and present project progress in order to achieve project milestones in a timely manner. This position will also serve as the iPSC Core lab manager and order laboratory supplies. Research Specialist BUnder limited supervision, designs, performs routine to moderately complex laboratory experiments related to assigned research projects, analyzes data and prepares data reports; keeps accurate and detailed lab notebooks; interacts with Core users for data reporting; provides assistance in the preparation of publications and presentations. He or she will also serve as the iPSC Core lab manager and orders laboratory supplies.Research Specialist CIn addition to performing all the duties for Research Specialist B, he or she will also assume more responsibility and independence in managing assigned research projects, establish and troubleshoot new protocols related to genome editing. He/she will also keep abreast with emerging genome editing literature.

Qualifications

Research Specialist B: The ideal candidate must hold the minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences or equivalent with at least 1 year to 3 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Relevant hands-on wet laboratory experience outside of the classroom preferred.Research Specialist C: The ideal candidate must hold the minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences or equivalent with at least 3 years to 5 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Advanced degree is highly desirable. Relevant hands-on wet laboratory experience outside of the classroom preferred.Both:The successful candidate must have a solid background in molecular biology techniques including restriction enzyme digestion, PCR, qRT-PCR and be proficient in DNA analysis software tools for PCR primer design and manipulation of DNA sequences. Experience with CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing in cell lines or animals is highly desirable. He/she should have hands-on experience in mammalian cell culture. Experience with hESC/hiPSC culture is highly desirable but not required. Experience with Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorting (FACS) is preferred. He/she should have excellent written and verbal communications skills, strong organizational skills and familiarity with computer software including Microsoft Office and Photoshop.
