Led by Penn professors Angela Duckworth and Katherine Milkman, the Behavior Change for Good Initiative unites leaders in the social sciences, medicine, computer science, and neuroscience, making this the greatest interdisciplinary effort in history to change behavior for good. The Initiative is developing an interactive digital platform to improve daily decisions about health, education, and savings. This position will be responsible for the development, monitoring and on-going maintenance of this research platform. These responsibilities include: Performing technical and functional analysis of information, processing and management systems; designing systems and identifying interrelationships among systems; preparing detailed specifications from which programs or processes are developed. Working with data sets, performing data analytics. Developing or modifying procedures to solve complex problems, taking into consideration computer equipment capacity and limitations. The software engineer will be responsible for program design, development, testing, debugging, maintenance and documentation; maintaining full knowledge of all phases of systems development methodology and strategies. The software engineer will also be responsible for monitoring and administering applications during scheduled experiments. Ensure adherence to departmental technical, quality assurance and security standards. Determines functional requirements for client business processes and may organize, plan and manage projects. This is a grant-funded position.


A Bachelor’s Degree and 3 years to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.* Creative problem solving skills and strong analytical skills required* Manage large volumes of experimental data* Programming in Python/Django and various forms of JavaScript (front-end frameworks, libraries, APIs) andHTML5/CSS3. Possible use of NodeJS/Mongo + Angular or React.* Keeps abreast of technology trends required* Demonstrated ability to learn new skills both technical and non-technical and the desire to continue doing so required* Solid knowledge about relational databases, NoSQL data stores, database design and querying required* Knowledge of JavaScript, CSS, and web development and software engineering principles required* Recent demonstrated experience in needs assessment required* Demonstrated ability to multi-task and work effectively within tight turnaround schedules required* Excellent verbal, written and technical communication skills and interpersonal skills required* Experience with modern MVC programming frameworks, advanced SQL, version control, automated testing required* Experience with project management and client communications requiredPreferred for all candidates:* Ability to work under tight timelines while juggling multiple priorities* Systems administration experience * Polyglot programming skills and open-source software contributions a plus* Previous experience with academic research a plus* Previous experience with AWS or other cloud architectures a plus
