University of Pennsylvania Urban Teaching Apprenticeship Program Instructional Coach in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Description: The Urban Teaching Apprenticeship Program (UTAP) at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education is seeking part-time Fieldwork Coaches to support apprentice teachers in Philadelphia schools. Fieldwork coaches are paid $1,500 base pay plus $1,500 per semester, per student.

Mission: UTAP develops members of a network of transformational educators advocating for educational justice in urban contexts. UTAP educators center the voices and agency of students and their communities, combining reflective practice with a deep understanding of content knowledge and culturally responsive pedagogy.

This is a 10-month, part-time position.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

Serve as liaison, coach, and supervisor for designated apprentice teachers and corresponding classroom mentors in Philadelphia

Apprentice Support Expectations

  • Engage in bi-weekly coaching cycle, including pre-observation meetings, in-person observations, and debriefing sessions.

  • Maintain regular weekly contact with apprentices in addition to feedback cycles; use this time to co-plan, work through problems of practice, or analyze student work

  • Check in with classroom mentor individually once a month (this can be via phone or in person) to plan collaborative feedback to present to apprentice based on the Teaching for Justice tool

  • Facilitate monthly triad meetings with apprentice teacher and classroom mentor to support apprentice development

  • Support apprentice teacher and classroom mentor to plan and implement gradual release of teaching responsibilities in the classroom

  • Support apprentice teacher in enacting practice-based assignments

  • Support apprentice teacher in practicing culturally responsive, student-centered, and social-justice oriented pedagogy

    Program Expectations

  • Engage in grading and evaluation of apprentice teachers’ portfolio

  • Maintain observational records for completion of UTAP’s Teaching for Justice tool (twice a year) and state mandated PDE 430

  • Communicate any concerns about apprentice teachers in a timely manner to UTAP leadership

  • Participate in program meetings (in-person and online) and professional development sessions 1-2 times per month

  • Participate in six lesson planning workshops on Fridays from September-February

  • Master’s Degree required

  • At least 5 years of teaching in a context similar to Philadelphia

  • Teacher certification in one of the areas offered through the program (elementary, 7-12 ELA, 7-12 social studies, 7-12 math, biology, and chemistry)

  • Ability to travel to different schools around Philadelphia for school visits

  • Prior experience coaching pre-service and/or novice teachers
